How to Clean Your Hardwoods in 4 Easy Steps
Hardwood flooring can be a major investment - one that takes a major beating! From tracking dirt, to spills, to pets and the everyday wear and tear of simply walking on them. Yet, we want them to gleam and shine at the end of the day.
Here are 4 Easy Steps to Cleaning Hardwood Floors in Birmingham, AL:
What You Need:
- Broom, dry mop or vacuum
- Bucket of water
- Dish soap
- Dry Cloth
Follow These Simple Steps:
- Clear the floor of any furniture that can be easily moved.
Tip: Invest in furniture pads—they make moving furniture much easier and prevent your wood floors from getting scuffed.)
- Sweep, vacuum or dry-mop the floor to get rid of all debris and surface dirt.
- Mop the floor - make sure you are going with the grain of the hardwood. For polyurethane floors dampen a mop with water and a few drops of dish soap. (Be sure to ring out the mop thoroughly before using it on the floor.) Going with the grain, mop back and forth in smooth strokes.
Tip: If your floors are lacquered or shellacked, don’t use water, which can stain the wood and cause buckling. Try using a natural wood floor cleaner instead.
- Buff floor with a cloth. To lift soapy residue after mopping and make your floor shine, hold a soft cloth in your hand and use it to rub the floor gently in a circular motion. Still not sparkling? Use a wood-floor cleaner recommended by the manufacturer.
Tip: Cloth diapers are great for buffing - they are soft and absorbent and get the job done!
