Is Scotchguard Protection Worth it in Birmingham AL?

Almost every day, we at Heaven’s Best Carpet and Upholstery Cleaning are asked this question, “Is Scotchguard Protection Worth it in Birmingham AL?”  And, our customers also want to know exactly what are the benefits of having carpet protection or Scotch guard applied.   This article explains our response.  

If you know for certain, or your experience is such that there will be no chance of spills, large amounts of soil being ground into your carpeting, and or no pet stains, then we would say that protection is not necessary for you.  But, what if you do have pets or children and it seems your household is prone to spills, than Scotch gard or carpet protection is probably a good idea.  Scotch gard should not be applied until after a professional carpet cleaning, and because Scotch gard is made of Teflon, it works similarly to a Teflon coated frying pan.  Scotchgard coats the carpet fibers and makes it easier for dirt to be wiped off, just like a Teflon skillet makes it easier for eggs to be flipped.  But, over time Teflon wears away, so even if your carpet originally had carpet protection when you purchased it, eventually the Teflon coating will rub off and will need to be reapplied.  But, it should only be applied after you have had your carpet professionally cleaned.

Now, for a big misconception about protectors like Scotchgard.  The answer is NO!  What’s the question you say?  Does Scotchgard keep my carpet clean?  Well, actually in a way it does help to keep your carpet clean because the dirt and oils do not stick to the carpeting due to the teflon coating.  This means the soil can easily be vacuumed out, which essentially means that the carpeting stays cleaner, but it does not mean that it keeps your carpeting clean.  Additionally, protection provides benefits such that your carpeting is less susceptible to: stains, damage from abrasives, and premature wear.
